The Penguin Dictionary of Architecture (third edition) was published in 1980. It was created for Penguin Reference and compiled by John Fleming, Hugh Honour and Nikolaus Pevsner.
It defines extrados as “the outer curved face of an arch or vault”.
An extrados can also define the outer curve of a dome or the upper curved face of an entire body of voussoirs.
Within an arch, there is an extrados - or exterior upper curve and an intrados - or interior lower curve.
