Siphon
In very general terms, a siphon is a tube that draws liquid upwards from a reservoir and then down to a lower level. Suction or emersion are initially used to draw liquid into the tube, after which flow of the liquid continues unaided.
Siphon can also be used as a verb to describe the process of siphoning.
Culvert, screen and outfall manual, (CIRIA C786) published by CIRIA in 2019, defines a siphon (or syphon) as: ‘More correctly referred to as a siphon. A particular form of culvert in which the conduit drops down to pass under an obstruction and then rises up at the other side, such that the centre part of the conduit is always full of water.’
