Root protection area
Trees in Hard Landscapes, A Guide for Delivery, published by the Trees and Design Action Group in September 2014, defines a root protection area (or tree protection zone) as: ‘…the minimum area around a tree deemed to contain sufficient roots and rooting volume for the tree to remain alive, and where the protection of the roots and soil structure is treated as a priority (formerly called tree protection zone in BS 5837 before the 2012 revision).’
