Peg
A peg is normally a connection piece, often tappered on one side used to connect to items together (pegged joint), to hang something (clothes peg), to fasten something (tent peg) or to mark something (survey peg). It might be used in the phrase 'off-the-peg' in colloquial English, meaning a ready made item, idea, design or construct.
In carpentry a peg is normally wooden and is used in trades such as greenwood framing, in engineering pegs may be metallic and potentially decribed as short pins or bolts, in both cases often tapered at one side. Clothes pegs and tenet pegs often have a variety of designs and can be made from metal, wood or plastic. Survey pegs are usually larger with an identifying colour and are used to mark points or boundaries of a site or points of a site being surveyed.
