Gauging
Durability Guaranteed - Pulhamite Rockwork - Its conservation and repair, published by Historic England in 2008, defines gauging as: ‘The use of a box (‘gauging box’) or bucket of standard volume to measure the precise quantities of material needed to make a given mortar; alternatively, the addition of a precise quantity of further material (for example, of Portland cement to a lime–sand mortar).’
