Collapse breccia
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, states: ‘Collapse breccia is formed where groundwater has circulated in the strata and dissolved the salt (a process called dissolution), so only insoluble rock remains above intact strata. With the salt removed and softening of the rock due to further groundwater flow, these insoluble rocks collapse and are broken up (brecciated).’
