The SuDS Manual (C753) published by CIRIA in 2015, defines adsorption as: 'The adherence of gas, vapour or dissolved matter to the surface of solids.'

Technical paper 35: Moisture measurement in the historic environment, published by Historic Environment Scotland in 2021, defines adsorption as: ‘A process in which a solid holds a gas or liquid on its surface as a thin film.’

It defines desorption as: 'The release of an adsorbed substance from a surface.'
