Tree planters and tree pits
Tree planters are: ‘Bioretention systems with trees planted within them to enhance their capacity and performance and/or to deliver additional amenity and biodiversity benefits.’
A tree pit is: ‘A constructed underground structure that is used to create voided space to contain a soil and/or storage volume, and protect the root system of one or more trees when located within a paved area.'

A planter aslo refers simply to a decorative container in which plants are grown, though planters may also be used as traffic calming devices in the urban planing of neighbourhoods such as homezones.
