Ecotone
The term 'ecotone' describes a transitional area of land located between two biological communities or biomes.
It combines the Greek word for tension, tonos with ecology, refering to ecological systems and was coined by A.Wallace in 1859 when observing the boundary between two biomes.
Examples of ecotones are marshlands that exist between dry and wet ecosystems, grasslands that exist between deserts and forests, estuaries between saltwater areas and freshwater areas and mangrove forests that mark the edge between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
