Biomethane
The Energy White Paper, Powering our Net Zero Future (CP 337), published in December 2020 by HM Government, defines biomethane as: ‘A form of gas that is produced by processing biomass It can be used for the same purposes as natural gas, like producing electricity or heat, and can use the same infrastructure for transmission and end-user equipment.’
Net Zero by 2050, A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector, published by the International Energy Agency in May 2021, states: ‘Biomethane is a near-pure source of methane produced either by upgrading biogas (a process that removes any CO2 and other contaminants present in the biogas) or through the gasification of solid biomass followed by methanation. It is also known as renewable natural gas.’
