Stool
An item of furniture that provides seating for one person is usually described as a chair. Chairs generally comprise a horizontal seat (or seat pan), an upright back support and legs or some other support device.
There are also armless chairs - with or without a back - that may be referred to as stools. This form of seating may be more suitable for ‘perching’ rather than sitting for long periods of time.
Some types of stools, such as bar stools, may have both back and arm rests. Bar stools may have adjustable mechanisms that allow them to swivel or go up and down.
The stool of the window is the horizontal strip along the bottom of the window frame. It is more commonly referred to as the window ledge or sill (or cill).
