Spindle
A spindle historically refers to a rotating shaft with a fixture for holding a tool (used for milling, grinding, or drilling) , in terms of construction the GIA Glossary of architectural hardware terms) refers to a spindle as a 'square metal bar that passes through the door connecting the handles or knobs together and operates the latch or lock mechanism'.
