Water Treatment for Closed Heating and Cooling Systems (BG 50/2021), second edition, by Dr Pamela Simpson, published by BSRIA in 2021, defines pH as: ‘A measure of the whether the water is alkaline or acidic based on the logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration. Water at pH 7 is neutral. Water at greater than pH 7 is alkaline and water at less than pH7 is acidic. For most metals, corrosion rates increase as the pH falls below 7.’
