Compatible emissions
Climate Change 2021 – The Physical Science Basis, Annex VII: Glossary, written by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and published by Cambridge University Press in 2023, states in relation to compatible emissions: ‘Earth system models that simulate the land and ocean carbon cycle can calculate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that are compatible with a given atmospheric CO2 concentration trajectory. The compatible emissions over a given period of time are equal to the increase of carbon over that same period of time in the sum of the three active reservoirs: the atmosphere, the land and the ocean.’
