Renewable Energy Procurement & Carbon Offsetting, Guidance for net zero carbon buildings, published by the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) in March 2021, suggests carbon offsets are: ‘Emission reductions or removals achieved by one entity can be used to compensate (offset) emissions from another entity.’

A carbon offset credit is: ‘A transferable instrument certified by government or independent certification bodies to represent an emission reduction of one metric tonne of CO2 or CO2e.’
