The Georgian, Issue 1, 2023
The Georgian (Issue 1, 2023) continues to highlight identification of historic architectural fixtures drawn from the Charles Brooking Collection. The sixth instalment looks at hob-fire grates and once again is splendidly illustrated. Where such grates survive in-situ, this article will help practitioners more accurately date Georgian and early Victorian buildings.
Also of note is an nicely illustrated article by Nigel Hankin, an archival volunteer for the Georgian Group, who shares his research on ‘Egyptian taste’ in Georgian England. Chrissie Paver, head of marketing and communications at Painshill, explores the development and restoration of this important landscape garden, currently attracting around 200,000 visitors a year. Much of the restoration work followed the establishment of the Painshill Park Trust in 1981. The author points out that there are still many management challenges. Climate change means that the park is increasingly subject to flooding, bridges have been damaged, and the ongoing upkeep and restoration have become more difficult to sustain financially.
