Capacity building
AR5 Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, Glossary, published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines capacity building as: ‘The practice of enhancing the strengths and attributes of, and resources available to, an individual, community, society, or organization to respond to change.’
Engagement Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work, published by the RIBA in January 2024, suggests that capacity building: ‘Refers to developing an individual’s or group’s knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a specific task or function. It can involve training, mentoring, coaching, and other activities designed to enhance the capacity of individuals, organisations, and communities to achieve their aims and objectives. Capacity building aims to improve effectiveness, sustainability, and resilience.’
