Pyrometallurgy
Pyrometallurgy as a word comes from the Greek pŷr or fire. It refers to the thermal treatment of minerals and metallurgical ores to extract metal substances. It also refers to the use of thermal treatment to initiate chemical reactions to transform materials or combine materials with specifically adjust characteristics. It is a one of the three branches of metallurgy, with the others being hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy. The three main types of pyrometallurgy might be considered as being calcination, roasting and smelting.
