Cutting
The word ‘cutting’ can refer to the process of opening, trimming or dividing something with a sharp-edged tool such as scissors or a knife. It can also refer to the material that is removed by the cutting process.
However, it may be used to refer to: ‘A linear excavation of soil or rock to make way for a new railway or road. Cuttings can help reduce the noise and/or visual impact of passing trains or road vehicles.’ Ref High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022.
