Species reintroduction

North Ayrshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan, 2019-2031, published by North Ayrshire Council, defines species as: ‘Groups of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations, which are reproductively isolated from other such groups. This definition – known as the Biological Species Concept – does not apply to species which reproduce asexually. Other definitions include the Phylogenetic Species Concept and the Evolutionary Species Concept.’

It defines species reintroduction as: ‘Restoring a species to parts of its natural range from which it has been lost. Also referred to as conservation translocation.’

Where range refers to: ‘The environmental conditions, or geographic area, within which a species occurs.’
