Stepping stones

Stepping-stones-1666746 1280.jpg

Traditionally, the term 'stepping stones' has referred to stones laid out across a walking route that allow people to step from one stone to another without walking on the ground or water between the stones. This can allow people to walk across muddy or unstable land or to cross shallow water.

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) defines stepping stones as: 'Pockets of habitat that, while not necessarily connected, facilitate the movement of species across otherwise inhospitable landscapes.' This is as opposed to wildlife corridors, which are: 'Areas of habitat connecting wildlife populations.' See also: Nature recovery network.
