Special Protection Areas (SPA) designated under the EC Birds Directive, along with Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) classified under the Habitats Directive, and Ramsar sites collectively form the Natura 2000 network.
'The aim of the network is to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.'
