Priority habitats and species

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in 2021, defines priority habitats and species as: ‘Species and Habitats of Principal Importance included in the England Biodiversity List published by the Secretary of State under section 41 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006.’

North Ayrshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan, 2019-2031, published by North Ayrshire Council, defines priority species and habitats as: ‘Species or habitats which are selected for conservation action by meeting set criteria. Previously the UK Biodiversity Action Plan listed priority species and habitats. In Scotland this has been superseded by the Scottish Biodiversity List – a list of animals, plants and habitats that Scottish Ministers consider to be of principal importance for biodiversity conservation in Scotland.’
