More intensive use

Resource Efficiency and Climate Change, Material Efficiency Strategies for a Low-Carbon Future, published by the UN Environment Programme in 2020, defines more intensive use (MIU) as an: ‘ME (material efficiency) strategy …entailing the use of less product to provide the same service. MIU of vehicles increases the occupancy of vehicles, which could be achieved by ride-sharing (car pooling), or the utilization rate of the vehicle, which can be achieved through car-sharing. For buildings, MIU could consist of peer-to-peer lodging, increasing household size/cohabitation, reduction of floor space per person, and the reduction of second homes.'
