Native species

North Ayrshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan, 2019-2031, published by North Ayrshire Council, defines native species as: ‘A species, subspecies or race that has been observed in the form of a naturally occurring and self-sustaining population in historical times, within its present or past natural range including the area which it can reach and occupy using its natural dispersal systems. For practical purposes in Britain, a British native species is often defined as one which has colonised the British Isles naturally since the last glaciation over 10000 years ago.’
