Retrofit and traditional approaches to comfort
There is a technique that has been developed in Bavaria, Germany for massive buildings (masonry, stone...) called tempering heating (temperierung) a form of radiant wall heating particularly for those buildings with rising damp problems. It was initially developed by the Bavarian Museums division as they found conventional convection heating systems did not deal with the rising damp problems effectively. The convection heating helped produce and distributed via convection currents mould, bacteria etc. on the building fabric and art works. It is also a relatively simple and low tech installation.

Very interesting, touched on many issues that I have studied in the past regarding CFC`s and VOC`s within airtight buildings. I am currently researching the perceived benefits of FIR in pre 1919 buildings. I think that passive measures such as heavy curtains and drapes and wooden panelling as an example in combination with FIR is certainly a viable option that will reduce carbon and remove the need for internal or external insulation on pre 1919 buildings. These buildings serviced the occupiers for hundreds of years without the need for insulation or central heating systems.
