Quicklime
Hot-mixed Lime Mortar, published by Historic Environment Scotland in April 2015 states: ‘Quicklime is the raw material produced when limestone (calcium carbonate) is fired in a kiln at a temperature of around 850°C. During this process the carbon dioxide is driven off, leaving highly reactive calcium oxide, known as ‘quicklime’.’
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) in their online Glossary define Quicklime or lump lime as 'Calcium oxide (CaO), the unstable material produced when limestone has been burnt but not slaked.'
