International day of forests
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 21 the International Day of Forests back in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. Countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.
The organisers are the United Nations Forum on Forests and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and other relevant organisations in the field.
The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) is a world-wide organisation devoted to forest research and related sciences. Its members are research institutions, universities, and individual scientists as well as decision-making authorities and other stakeholders with a focus on forests and trees. IUFRO aims to contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
