Net zero electricity grids BSRIA NZG 5/2024
[edit] Introducing this guide
The transformation of the global energy landscape is one of the defining challenges and opportunities of our time.
For a century or more, the availability of electricity has been a given – when demand has increased, the infrastructure has expanded to provide it. The generation of electricity is changing – in short, less fossil fuel, more renewables. The consumption of electricity is also changing, with the ongoing electrification of heating, transport and industry. The way electricity supply and demand are managed must also change, and the technology now exists to do this at a building level as well as at a local, regional and national level.
[edit] Net zero series of guides
This guide outlines the changes that will be needed over the next few years as we transition to a net zero economy. It is the fifth in a series of guides published by the Net Zero Building Centre, a joint venture between BSRIA and London South Bank University.
- Net Zero Carbon Buildings NZG 1/2022
- Indoor Environmental Quality and Net Zero NZG 2/2023
- The Global Context for Net Zero NZG 3/2023
- Embodied Carbon NZG 4/2023
The Net Zero Building Centre is a joint venture between BSRIA and LSBU with the aim of accelerating decarbonisation in the built environment. It is an innovation hub and centre of excellence that builds on the shared strengths of BSRIA and LSBU in the field of low carbon buildings.
This guide explains the transformations which the UK’s electricity grids will need to undergo in order to realise a net zero future. It is published by the Net Zero Building Centre, a joint venture between BSRIA and London South Bank University.
