Slough Bus Station
The article on Slough Bus Station ignores the reality of users' responses, which have been uniformly negative in terms of the functionality and user-friendliness of the environment that it provides. It is described as a bleak and inhospitable environment for passengers & bus drivers alike. Users describe it as not being weather proof and offering little sanctuary whilst waiting for buses
The problem seems to be that it elevates visual design values over and above function. It offers a rhetorical design statement but little else. It is known locally - without affection - as the Slug.
In all, it shows the danger of architecture that is led by talking the talk (aesthetics & theory) but that signally fails to walk the walk. Seen from a distance it is unobjectionable, but at close quarters and as a habitat it entirely lacks charm.
