The Trussed Rafter Association (TRA) has revealed the winners of the 2025 Roofscape Design Awards during the evening dinner at its Annual General Meeting and Conference.

Recognising innovation and technical excellence in roofscape design, the awards this year featured six categories. Three project-based categories - Commercial Project of the Year, Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year, and Residential Project of the Year – were complemented by three new individual awards: Career Champion of the Year, Innovation Champion of the Year, and Safety Champion of the Year.

The judging panel praised the winning entries for their complexity, attention to detail, and thoughtful integration of health and safety, sustainability, and practicality.

The AGM and conference, sponsored by leading TRA suppliers, featured two supplier focus sessions . Attendees had the opportunity to connect directly with members and sponsors, including BPC Fixings, Hundegger, ITW Construction Products, Simpson Strong-Tie, and Virtek.

This year’s winning projects demonstrated outstanding technical skill, creativity, and a clear commitment to health and safety and sustainability.

The winning projects are:

* Commercial Project of the Year – Learning Disability and Autism (LDA) unit, Langdon Hospital, designed by Jamie Underwood of Crendon Timber Engineering.
The entry was recognised for its technical complexity, including a large metal web joist scheme and challenging intersections. Judges praised the detailed submission and the thoughtful integration of an essential vapour barrier.
* Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year – The Engine House, designed by Elicia Brumley of Acorn Timber Engineering.
The judges were impressed by the comprehensive submission, which addressed every aspect of the project. The intricate roof structure, long spans, and shallow pitch were handled with exceptional attention to detail.
* Residential Project of the Year – Plots 1 and 2, Knowle Road, designed by Ranjit Gill of Wyckham Blackwell.
Praised for reducing the need for a steel frame and avoiding a cut roof, this project tackled complex elements such as rooms in the roof and a mix of vaulted and flat sections, supported by strong health and safety and sustainability considerations.

Individual award winners are:

* Career Champion of the Year – Jack West-Jordan, Crendon Timber Engineering (nominated by Tim Wilson).
The Roofscape Design Awards 2025 will see the three project-based categories, which are:

* Commercial Project of the Year: Recognising excellence in non-residential projects, from offices to public buildings.
* Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year: Celebrating innovative designs for transforming or improving existing buildings.
* Residential Project of the Year: Honouring outstanding design and craftsmanship in new-build housing.

Nick Boulton, chief executive of the TRA, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s awards, stating:

“Trussed rafters are a widely used modern method of roof construction made from nature’s most sustainable building material - timber.

“Although it is estimated that there are about 60 million trussed rafters in service in the UK today, the design skills involved in their construction often remain underappreciated within the construction industry.

“The Roofscape Design Awards will shine a spotlight on the roof truss designers’ problem-solving skills while showcasing timber engineering design as an attractive career for the next generation. The 2023 and 2024 entries were spectacular and inspiring, and we will be celebrating the beautifully completed projects of 2024.”
The Trussed Rafter Association (TRA) announces the return of the Roofscape Design Awards 2025, an event dedicated to recognising the ingenuity and technical skill of designers in the trussed rafter sector.

Following two highly successful years, three new individual categories will be introduced to highlight personal achievements in sustainability, health and safety, and emerging talent within the trussed rafter industry.

The Roofscape Design Awards 2025 will see the three project-based categories, which are:

# Commercial Project of the Year
Recognising excellence in non-residential projects, from offices to public buildings.
# Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year
# Residential Project of the Year
Honouring outstanding design and craftsmanship in new-build housing.
The new individual categories are as follows:
# Innovation Champion of the Year
Recognising individuals leading technological, sustainability and operational innovation.
# Safety Champion of the Year
Celebrating dedication to maintaining and promoting safe practices within the trussed rafter industry.
# Career Development Champion
Recognising individuals showing dedication to their ongoing training and professional development.

“The Roofscape Design Awards will shine a spotlight on the roof truss designers’ problem-solving skills while showcasing timber engineering design
as an attractive career for the next generation. The 2023 and 2024 entries were spectacular and inspiring, and we will be celebrating the beautifully completed projects of 2024.”

TRA Roofscape Design Awards open for entry on 25 November to all TRA member companies in the UK and Ireland. Winners will be announced at the TRA AGM in April 2024.

[[File:TRA - Roofscape Design Awards 2024.png]]

A packed audience of Trussed Rafter Association members gathered this week to see who would win the hotly contested Roofscape Design Awards 2024.

The Awards, now in their second year, celebrate the highly technical skills required to design trussed rafter roofs, joists, and panels. The awards took place at the TRA Annual General Meeting and Conference at Mercure Warwickshire Walton Hall Hotel & Spa.

The awards were given in three categories:

* Residential Project of the Year (for newbuild dwellings)
* Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year (for existing housing projects)
* Commercial Project of the Year (for all non-domestic projects)

The judging panel included Nick Boulton, chief executive of the TRA; Rob Lockey (former head of training at the NHBC); and Les Fuller, chair of the technical committee of [http://www.tra.org.uk/ the TRA.]

= The awards =

In the Residential Project of the Year went to designer Phil Morgan of Wyckham Blackwell Ltd for – The Copper House project. The judges were impressed with the extensive knowledge of the architectural requirements of the designer and how the design applied a trussed rafter application and ensured that the ‘form did follow the function’.

Wyckham Blackwell Ltd also took home the award for the Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year with The Black Country Living Museum, designed by Joe Dudley.
The judges agreed that it was an example of how to successfully comply with client and historical requirements and still achieve suitable timber engineering for a project.

For the Commercial Project of the Year, it was a unanimous decision that Acorn Timber Engineering’s Welton Extra Care Apartments and Bungalows designed by Simon Copley was the winner for the category. The project started with suppling metal web joists to ending up tendering for the entire roof structure of the main apartment building and ten individual bungalows - resulting in almost 3,500 square metres of the roof surface and 2,500 manufactured items

The highly commended design was awarded to DWB Roof Truss Ltd’s Phil Daniels for the Sianwood project. Judges were impressed by the application of Posi-Joists in ensuring a prefabricated design solution for the project that was creatively achieved.

= Supported by trussed rafter designers =
Nick Boulton said: “The trussed rafter industry is keen to highlight the problem-solving and design skills required in such an important element of the roofing system in construction projects.

“Thank you to all the designers who have entered the awards this year, it was very fascinating to see the creativity and technical expertise in all the designs that were submitted.

“I would like to congratulate all those who took part, particularly the winners of this year’s Awards and look forward to watching your continued success in the industry. The Roofscape Design Awards will be returning in 2025.”

The TRA technical committee has published new guidance to help members and their customers when engineered wood products have faced prolonged exposure to the weather due to site delays or difficulties.

Discussions between the supplier and their customer can sometimes become difficult in such circumstances and this new document is intended to provide an independent view in the most critical areas.

The document covers the range of engineered wood products provided by members including trussed rafters and metal web joists giving consideration to the risks that each is likely to face, and the impact the prolonged exposure may have on future performance.

It includes some advice about potential remediation where this may be possible, but ultimately the client and their building designer must be responsible for approving any course of action proposed.

The Trussed Rafter Association’s (TRA) [https://www.tra.org.uk/roofscape-design-awards/ Roofscape Design Awards] is back to showcase and celebrate the ingenuity and technical skills of designers in the trussed rafter sector.

Following a successful launch in 2023, the awards are back for its second year. The awards will recognise projects that showcase the highest design, innovation, and sustainability standards in using timber-trussed rafter roofs.

The Roofscape Design Awards will recognise excellence in three categories: Commercial Project of the Year (for all non-domestic projects), Conversion and Refurbishment Project of the Year (for existing housing projects), and Residential Project of the Year (for newbuild dwellings).

Last year’s winners included Harry Peate (Truss Form (Midlands) Ltd), who designed the roof for a Grade II listed structure built over 180 years ago; Gemma Weston (DWB Anglia) who created an open habitable roof space without vertical posts or large steel structures; and Sue Darbyshire’s (Donaldson Timber Engineering) complex design which facilitated the installation of a mechanical and electrical component while allowing the external roof envelope to be covered..
