On 25 June 2015, the UK Contractors’ Group (UKCG) and the National Specialist Contractors' Council (NSCC) confirmed that they would merge to create [https://builduk.org/ Build UK], ‘…a strong collective voice for the contracting supply chain in construction’, to ‘…improve conditions for the supply chain, the wider industry and its clients.’ (Ref. UKCG Press Statement 25/6/2015.)

This followed calls from the government for a single, unified voice from the construction industry, combined with an increasing realisation that the UKCG and NSCC held similar positions in a number of key areas.

[[File:Build-UK-log_180.jpg|link=https://builduk.org/]]

[https://builduk.org/ Build UK] launched on 1 September 2015, led by Chief Executive Suzannah Nichol MBE (previously NSCC Chief Executive). By bringing together Clients, Main Contractors, Trade Associations representing over 11,500 Specialist Contractors and other organisations committed to industry collaboration, Build UK represents in excess of 40% of UK construction. Build UK has four categories of membership: Alliance, Clients, Contractors and Trade Associations.

Talking to Construction Manager in August 2015, former site engineer Nichol said, "There are over 200 trade organisations in construction, which makes getting across a single or unified message very difficult. We aim to be a strong, collective voice for main and specialist contractors. We want to be smarter in how we operate, and smarter in how we communicate with government bodies, the government itself and organisations such as the CITB."

Joint Chairmen of Build UK, Kevin Louch and James Wates said: “Our discussions in the run up to the merger have clearly shown that we share a common position on the majority of issues such as image, skills, health and safety, and procurement. Both Government and our clients have been waiting for a joined up approach from the industry and, as a single organisation for the contracting supply chain, we will pack a powerful punch and have a real chance to make some big changes.”

Minister of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Nick Boles said: “The creation of Build UK is a very welcome development and places them in an influential position to continue improving performance across the sector.”

Build UK marked its launch by publishing an [https://builduk.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Build-UK-Action-Plan-2019-20-new.pdf Action Plan] intended to address key industry issues, improve the delivery of projects and drive growth.

The Action Plan suggests that construction is faced with a number of long-standing issues that require a new approach and that Build UK will initially focus on:

* The image of construction.
* The industry’s skills needs.
* Effective pre-qualification.
* Health and safety performance.
* Fair payment practices.

For more information see: Build UK action plan.

In September 2016, it was announced that Argent and Great Portland Estates where the first developers to join Build UK and that more were expected to follow. Phil Sullivan, Construction Director at Argent, said, “We now have a fantastic opportunity to work more collaboratively with the contracting supply chain and improve the quality and performance of our built environment, and I would encourage more clients to join us and help deliver lasting results for the industry.”

In January 2017, it was announced that Derwent London, British Land and Keltbray had joined Build UK.

In February 2017, it was announced that the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) had joined Build UK. Chris Blythe OBE, Chief Executive of the CIOB, said: “We are delighted to add our voice and expertise to the Build UK chorus. The industry is at its best when it collaborates and that is something we need to reflect when we talk to government and clients. Our public benefit agenda and ambition to create a safer, more professional and rewarding career for those who join construction is sentiment shared by Build UK and together we can make an even bigger difference.”

This was followed in March 2017 by Berkeley Group and Carey Group.

In 2018, Build UK announced that it would accept consultancy firms as members, that Arup, Cast Consultancy and Rider Levett Bucknall UK had joined a new professional services membership category.

In 2020, it was announced that Laing O'Rourke and Transport for London (TfL) had joined Build UK.

In 2022, Build UK was awarded the '[https://constructorscompany.org.uk/what-we-do/scholarship-awards/royal-charter-award/ Royal Charter Award for Excellence in Construction]' by the Worshipful Company of Constructors for the leadership role it played during COVID-19.

= Overview =

Build UK was established in 2015 and is the leading representative organisation for the UK construction industry, delivering change and enabling the construction supply chain to improve the efficiency and delivery of construction projects for the benefit of the UK economy. By bringing together Clients, Main Contractors, Trade Associations representing over 11,500 Specialist Contractors and other organisations committed to industry collaboration, Build UK represents in excess of 40% of UK construction.

In April 2016, Build UK published a new standard ‘[https://builduk.org/SafetyHelmetColours Safety Helmet Colours]’, to be implemented on all new construction sites, and all existing construction sites where practicable (exceptions include Network Rail, who only permit white and blue helmets on its infrastructure).

The standard was drafted in consultation with Build UK members to provide ‘… a clear and consistent approach to improve communication and safety across construction projects’.

Safety helmets are primarily intended to ‘…protect the upper part of a wearer’s head against injury from falling objects’ (ref BS EN 397 Industrial safety helmets), however, they can also indicate the role and competence of the wearer to others.

The colour standards for safety helmets set out by Build UK are:

* Black: Supervisor.
* Orange: Slinger / Signaller.
* White: Site Manager, Competent Operative, Vehicle Marshal (distinguished by the wearing of a different coloured high visibility vest).
* Blue: All those on site not undertaking one of the other roles.

It also prescribes two helmet stickers:

* Green: First Aider.
* Red: Fire Marshal.

All helmets must meet BS EN 397 or BS EN 12492 Industrial safety helmets.

Safety Helmet Colour was published alongside a Training Standard, specifying and promoting card schemes carrying the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) logo, which helps contractors assess the competence of construction workers and with their eligibility to work on-site.

Suzannah Nichol MBE, Chief Executive of Build UK, said: “Health and safety is a priority for Build UK and we are delighted with the positive response from our members who have welcomed the latest standards, which aim to make life easier and help them meet the increasing demands of working on-site. We will continue to bring the contracting supply chain together to engage intelligently and collaboratively in policy debates ensuring that Build UK, as the voice of the industry, leads positive and meaningful change”.

In September 2016, Highways England announced they would adopt the hard hat colour system for all construction and maintenance sites from 1 January 2017.
