Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance
The Mayor’s Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) was published in November 2012

The SPG provides guidance on how to implement the housing policies in the 2011 London Plan (LP). In particular, it provides detail on how to carry forward the Mayor’s view that “providing good homes for Londoners is not just about numbers. The quality and design of homes, and the facilities provided for those living in them, are vital to ensuring good liveable neighborhoods”.
It is informed by the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework and by its Housing Strategy for England.
The standards also reflect the Mayor’s policy that new housing should meet the needs of Londoners at different stages of life.
The SPG notes "Housing should be designed so that people can use it safely, easily and with dignity regardless of their age, disability, gender or ethnicity. It should meet inclusive design principles by being responsive, flexible, convenient, accommodating, and welcoming." Lifetime Homes criteria have been incorporated into the housing design standards and Annex 2 of the SPG summarises the Mayor’s best practice guidance on wheelchair accessible housing.

This SPG replaces the 2005 SPG, the 2010 Interim Housing SPG and the draft SPG Affordable Housing note.
