Every year it seems there is a new plan for the tallest or largest building in the world. More and more enormous skyscrapers are being constructed as countries compete to show off their architectural skill. Here are eight of the most impressive skyscrapers currently under construction.

Jeddah Tower, Saudi Arabia

Estimated to be completed in 2020, Jeddah Tower is set to be the focal point of the Jeddah Economic City development in Saudi Arabia. If it is completed as planned the Tower will be the tallest building in the world. It will also be the first building to reach one kilometre in height. Initially it was planned to be more than a mile high but the desert base would not have supported a building that tall. The tower is set to feature a Four Seasons hotel as well as luxury apartments and offices.

Lotte World Tower, South Korea

Already the tallest building in South Korea, the Lotte World Tower is set for completion sometime in late 2016 having been topped out in December 2015. When it has been completed it will have the tallest man-made observation deck in the world. With a mix of offices, residences and hotel rooms, the tower is a breathtaking addition to Seoul’s skyline.

Ping An Finance Centre, China

One of a new generation of megatall skyscrapers in China, the Ping An Finance Centre sits in Shenzhen. With a target height of 600m, it is set to become the fourth tallest building in the world when it is completed. The Centre will serve as the headquarters for Ping An Insurance but is also set to feature a luxury shopping mall, conference centre, hotel and offices. The building is so massive that it had to be scaled back from its initial plans for fears that it would interfere with flight paths!

Marina 101, UAE

Topped out in 2015 and opening very soon, Marina 101 will become the tallest residential building in the world. In a Dubai skyline filled with towering skyscrapers, the Marina 101 stands out for its unbelievable height – only Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, looks down on it. The building will also feature the Middle East’s first ever Hard Rock Hotel.

Goldin Finance 117, China

Goldin Finance 117 is currently being built in Tianjin, China, where it will become by far the tallest building in the city. Standing only a couple of metres shorter than the Ping An Finance Centre, this megatall skyscraper will have the distinction of having two more floors than its taller counterpart. Holding commercial offices and residential properties, the tower will also house a hotel.

World One, India

While it’s true that Marina 101 in Dubai is set to become the tallest residential building, it won’t hold the title for long. That’s because of the construction of World One which will have 117 floors and will stand at 442 metres. Featuring apartments with interiors designed by Giorgio Armani, World One is set to become one of the hottest properties in Mumbai when it is completed in 2017.

Lakhta Centre, Russia

After a number of false starts in trying to gain permission to build a tower at the centre of St Petersburg, it was finally agreed that a skyscraper would be built in Lakhta, a suburb of the city. Known as the Lakhta Centre, it will be the first supertall skyscraper in the city and on completion will become Russia and Europe’s tallest building. The tower will not feature any residential property but will be home to a range of offices, a sports centre, a hotel, a medical centre and a free public observation deck.

Australia 108, Australia

Australia 108 is set to become the second tallest building in Australia when its construction is completed in 2020. The penthouse apartment on the 100th floor was sold for A$25m – an Australian record.

Although the scare of Global Warming has calmed down in the past decade, reducing your carbon footprint is still as important now as ever. With smart phones, tablets and bigger and better games consoles paving the way for a new, technology heavy generation, it is important to think about where all our energy comes from and whether or not we can find an alternate way to generate that energy.

As a result of the technological age, we no longer print everything out in order to read it, we use far less paper and most things are accessible online. However there is an electrical cost for running this equipment and primarily we use coal or oil to fuel the technology we easily take for granted. Fossil fuels are a limited energy source and they will eventually run out, so it is important to start switching over to renewable forms of energy.

There are a number of different forms of energy and it is important to understand how these energy systems generate energy, how effective they are and what the costs will be of running them.

Nuclear<br/>By using exothermic nuclear processes we can generate useful heat and electrical energy. Although it is widely argued that nuclear energy is a safe, sustainable energy source with reduced carbon emissions, in the event of a nuclear accident, the effects are disastrously devastating.

The side effects of a nuclear accident, such as the ones at Chernobyl or Fukushima, can severely affect the surrounding area and all human, animal and plant life within that area. In certain cases the area surrounding these nuclear plants must be shut down and considered uninhabitable for a number of months and even years before it is considered safe to re-enter.

Solar<br/>Solar energy is one of the more generally accepted forms of renewable energy as by using the energy of the sun you can power a number of things, from a small lamp to your own home in the winter. Arguments have been made that solar panels are often not that effective as most people do not receive enough sun for the panels to do their work, however they are surprisingly adept at transforming the energy they can into usable electrical and heat energy.

Solar panels can be expensive to start with, however in the long run they provide substantial benefits and throughout the UK there are even a few schemes offering you the use of solar panels if your home fits certain criteria. Unfortunately they can be fairly large and are treated as somewhat of an eyesore when compared to the tiled roofs we are used to looking at.

Bio thermal<br/>Energy derived by composting biological material. By composting this material, heat and methane is produced. Currently bio thermal energy is normally used to promote the growth of plants, but it may be used as an alternative of burning natural gas to create energy. Bio thermal energy is a relatively new form of renewable energy and so in order for any progress to be made, more research into bio thermal energy needs to be done.

Hydroelectric<br/>In short, electricity generated by hydropower; using the gravitational force of flowing water or falling water. Often hydroelectric power is used in manmade dams and waterfalls. Currently it is the most widely used form of renewable energy and is responsible for 16% of the electricity generated globally. It is expected to increase exponentially in the coming years.

The cost is low and the amount of energy generated can be changed up or down to meet with current demands. Hydroelectric power is currently used in 150 countries with China being the largest hydroelectric producer. It produces no waste however the creation of dams for hydroelectric purposes can displace wildlife and can be damaging to various ecosystems because of their size.

Wind Farms<br/>The conversion of wind energy into useful energy is normally done by using wind turbines and windmills which make up large wind farms. Often there are 100’s of individual turbines, which are connected to the electric power transmission network.

Onshore wind farms are inexpensive and even cheaper than fossil fuel plants, however they are visually offensive, whereas offshore farms are more visually appealing, but their installation and maintenance costs are higher. Wind power makes up 2.5% of the current global electricity usage, but continues to grow at a steady rate of 25% each year.

Whether you live in the centre of a busy city or you have a rustic country home, it is important to remember your limitations when considering a renewable energy system. For example, ground source heat pumps can be extremely useful but are better for country houses, whereas solar panels are ideal for city dwellers or those living in towns.

The Pros and Cons of Different Boiler Types

There are many different types of boilers available, and choosing the right one for your home or property is a decision that needs to be carefully considered. Because of the variety of boiler types, it’s best to look at the options available instead of picking a specific type from the beginning. This will be more beneficial to you in the long term, as it will enable you to pick the best boiler for you.

The three main types of boiler systems that you will come across in your search are combi, system and conventional boilers. There are also other types of boilers that you might find, such as biomass boilers. Here is a quick rundown of the main types of boilers and their pros and cons, which will help you when deciding which boiler would best suit you and your preferences.

Combi Boilers

Combination Boilers are more commonly known as combi boilers and are one of the most popular types of boiler in the UK for providing homes with heating and hot water. Combi boilers do not require a water tank, and you can also choose between a gas or an electric combi boiler depending on your preferences.

One of the main advantages of a combi boiler is that they are typically quite compact. Most boiler types require a larger space to be installed as a water tank needs to be fitted. Combi boilers do not require water tanks, so they take up less space and can be installed in smaller, more limited areas of the home. Combi boilers also provide unlimited heat and hot water and are often cheaper to install because of their smaller size. As no water tank is needed to be heated up, combi boilers can also provide hot water at a faster rate.

There are not many disadvantages to a combi boiler, although no system is truly perfect. Installing a combi boiler is often a complex process, so getting an expert in to help is almost a guaranteed necessity. Combi boilers are also often reliant on the mains pressure, and if more than one shower, bath or tap is being used in the house at the same time, combi boilers can often struggle to provide hot water to all systems.

System Boilers

Sealed System Boilers are another common type of boiler found in homes and properties throughout the UK, but are certainly not as common as combi boilers. Similarly to combi boilers, system boilers do not require a water tank, instead using a water cylinder that sits in a storage room.

As with combi boilers, system boilers will not have a water tank taking up extra space in your home. Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of a system boiler, which gives it a bit of an advantage over combi boilers, is that they allow multiple taps and systems to be used at the same time. This is ideal for family homes or larger properties. Homes requiring hot water in more than once place at a time will certainly benefit from a system boiler.

The disadvantages of a system boiler is that the hot water is not instant, meaning you will need to wait a short while for the water to heat up. The hot water supply is also limited and can run out if the amount of people using it is high. Although you don’t have to deal with a water tank, you will still need to consider where you will be able to put the water cylinder, if that is at all possible.

Conventional Boilers

Also known as open vent or regular boilers, conventional boilers are an older type of boiler system that is often found throughout older properties in the UK. Unlike combi boilers and system boilers, conventional boilers use both a cylinder and a water tank, taking up more space.

Conventional boilers are a good choice for larger homes and properties where there is a bigger need for hot water from more than one tap. They are also considered to be reliable, and were often relied upon before combi boilers started to come into mainstream use.

However, the number of disadvantages have grown over the years as they have become older systems and are often outdone by the efficiency offered by combi boilers and other types. A common problem suffered by conventional boilers is that the hot water can run out over time and you will need to wait for the water to reheat. The large water tank takes up more space, which is increased further when you consider that you will also need a water tank.

Biomass Boilers

Biomass boilers are a friendly alternative to standard boiler types, running on renewable fuels such as wood pellets that can easily be replaced. The emissions produced by biomass boilers are much lower than emissions from fossil fuels and traditional boiler types. If you are looking for a green alternative to standard boiler systems, you should definitely consider looking into biomass boilers.

As mentioned, the carbon dioxide emissions are lower than standard boilers and fossil fuels. This is because the carbon dioxide emitted is the same amount that was absorbed while the plant was growing, which helps to balance it out. The price of fuel types for biomass boilers is often cheaper than other heating options and can be locally sourced. Financial support from the government is also available under the Renewable Heat Incentive, which can help to further reduce overall costs.

One disadvantage of biomass boilers however is the space needed, as they are larger than standard boilers such as their gas and oil counterparts. You will also need space to keep the fuel, which is another important factor to consider. If there is not a local supplier who can deliver fuel, then you may also find yourself paying slightly more for fuel deliveries. You may also need planning permission to install a biomass boiler system, so it is best to check before choosing a biomass boiler.

5 Ingenious Ways Cherry Pickers Are Used

Cherry pickers, a piece of machinery that is easily identified by its unique look – a long extendible arm with a cradle attached on the end. It is a multi-use tool and great for any job that requires the user to be at a great height, even in the most awkward of locations. Cherry Pickers are an important part of many industries and often go unnoticed in the role they play. Below are 5 ways that we make use of these fantastic machines to enhance our lives.

Cherry Picking

The name cherry pickers comes from the use they were originally designed to assist with – that’s right, cherry pickers were designed to help people pick cherries! Up and down the country you can still find them being used in fruit orchards, helping to get the hard to reach fruit at the tops of trees and in difficult to reach locations. These machines revolutionised how people could pick fruit and ensured the best fruit could always be picked in safe manner – with no danger of falling from great heights. As well as the safety element it has made the process of picking fruit more efficient through great time savings and the lesser risk of losing fruit to falls.

Telegraph Poles

You will often see a cherry picker in your street when there is an issue with either the telephone or electrical cables. The machines allow engineers to easily reach the top of telegraph poles to either inspect or repair cabling. The engineers are highly skilled, due to their work involving electricity, but their job has been made much less dangerous and complex through the use of cherry pickers. In times gone by, engineers were expected to ascend the poles on nothing but a ladder – you can only imagine how this may have felt on a windy day. Now they can safely reach the top of telegraph poles in the relative safety of the cherry picker’s cradle with space for their tools and multiple engineers.

Cleaning

Maintenance of windows and facades is an important part of keeping buildings in a good state of repair. Much like the engineers climbing telegraph poles, cherry pickers have made the process of cleaning and maintaining higher portions of a property much easier and safer. No longer do you need a series of ladders or scaffolding to get to those hard to reach locations carrying tools, buckets and all sorts of equipment you needed.

Use by the Fire Service

This use is one of the more important contributions that the cherry picker has made to helping with public safety. The fire brigade will often use a cherry picker to not only fight fires but to save lives. It allows them to reach higher floors and gives a safe platform for those trapped on higher floors to step onto to reach safety. It is also a reasonably quick method of reaching the higher levels of buildings meaning that it can be used multiple times in one emergency to continually save lives. The humble cherry picker has played a large part in many fire survival stories and is a greatly respected asset of many fire services arsenal.

Filming Hollywood Movies

From real life to the stage, cherry pickers take the spotlight in many a Hollywood great. For shots that require an aerial angle, or one from height, the cherry picker is often used to achieve this. It can be used in a lot of locations, proving its versatility, and gives the camera operator the perfect position above the scene. Cameras can also be mounted directly on a cherry picker and remotely controlled to get those incredible aerial sweeping shots. As with all things in Hollywood, it is what happens behind the camera that makes a film successful.

The above are just a few examples of how cherry pickers are used throughout the world, showing its versatility and dependability across a number of uses. There are undoubtedly some incredible uses that most people would not be able to conceive but from the humble beginnings of helping to pick fruit, the cherry picker has developed into a multi-use piece of machinery that has enriched the lives of many.

Professional surveyors are always going on about how it is essential to get an in depth survey requested on a potential property and although it is not a cheap process it is certainly worth the money. An expert surveyor will be able to assess the condition of the property you are looking at, identifying any potential or harmful defects that can be costly to fix. A lot can go wrong very quickly if a property is not up to scratch, and surveyors are here to make sure those sorts of mistakes don’t happen.

Here, property-surveying experts RMA Surveyors take a look at five of the most expensive property defects that a survey may uncover, which can lead to some hefty bills being avoided later on.

1.'Fixing up Foundations

Foundations are an essential part of any structure, property or otherwise. When water gets in through cracks and holes in concrete, sprouts mould, seeps through walls and can weaken and break foundations. This is where things get serious. Water damage can be devastating to foundation walls, so it is essential to check the property for any water sources to make sure they are not in danger of harming the foundations.

The ground around the foundation should slope slightly away from the house as this prevents a build-up of rainwater. Another useful tip is to make sure that your gutters and drains remain clear from leaves and debris.

2.'Roofing Solutions

A roof in need of repair is not doing its job property. Damaged roofs can lead to water getting into the walls, which leads to mould, mildew and damp. You will need to check your roof thoroughly for signs of cracked or missing slates, as it is extremely expensive to replace the whole roof.

3.'Termites or Woodworms

Woodworms cause the most damage to timber framed properties, although they can severely affect other forms of housing as well. Active between April and September, these beetles eat through exposed wood, leaving small round holes and dust shavings everywhere. Infestations often only grow if not attended to and in extreme cases you will need to completely fumigate and then replace all affected areas of the property.

You can identify woodworms by the small round holes they leave, or if you see the adult beetles scurrying around the house throughout the year. Smaller infestations can be cleared up using a chemical clearer, although this will still need to be done by a professional.

4.'An Issue with the Water or Sewer Line

One of the worst possible things you can see when buying a property is the water or sewer line. These giant pipes are normally buried several feet underground and if they are exposed to the elements, this is a real warning sign in itself. Conducting an annual check on the water and sewer line is essential to make sure that there are no leaks or cracks, however there should be no major issues.

If there are issues with your water or sewer line, this becomes an expensive problem to fix. Repairing the line isn’t the big part of the bill; it is the clean-up that you’ll need to do following the break. Broken lines will cause water to back up and seep back into the house, creating large puddles that can warp and damage soil, wood and even bricks if left unattended. Not ideal if you’ve only just moved in.

5.'Bad Electrical Wiring

This is not so much expensive as it is incredibly unsafe. Many DIY ‘experts’ will have done their own wiring when improving their homes, only really ‘making do’ when it comes to proper cabling. The cables should not be strung about willy nilly, a professional will always strap them down neatly so that you can clearly identify which wire is which. Again, this is certainly not a job for Uncle Fred unless he is a licensed electrician. Get the professionals in.

Even if you feel as though you have conducted a thorough inspection on the property in question and you are sure that everything is in order, it is always recommended that you get a surveyors to check it out first. Surveyors are trained professionally in recognising faults and defects and you can be sure there will be things you have missed. So why not be safe rather than sorry?

Smaller business are doing what they can to follow in the footsteps of Apple, who recently introduced plans for a “solar powered” command centre in Arizona, USA.

Unfortunately for smaller businesses, the project is set to cost the tech giant over $2 billion which, it’s fair to say, is some way away from what most small businesses would be prepared to invest in renewable energy.

On the other hand, many companies are investing in renewable energy to keep operations going and they don’t have the same funds available as Apple do. You certainly don’t need to be huge tech tycoon introduce a new renewable energy plan.

There are numerous benefits from having a renewable energy-focused incentive at your business and you don’t have to spend millions to incorporate one.

Here are some of the steps you can take to promote a new renewable energy plan with a smaller budget in mind, as advised by renewable energy experts ISO Energy.

Build Support from the Rest of the Company

The first thing you’ll need to do is persuade everyone else in the company that your renewable energy plan is the way forward. It’s unlikely that everyone came together at one time with a plan to incorporate renewable energy into the business, let alone those in higher positions within the company.

Your most valued support will come from CEO’s and other key members of the business, while colleagues and shareholders will also need to be informed and persuaded. This will ensure the transition to renewable energy runs as smoothly as possible.

Understand Your Goals and Expectations

There are goals and there are expectations. You may well achieve something incredible with your newly introduced renewable energy plan but in most cases, you are likely to have to compromise along the way. You need to know what you expect so that realistic goals can be set prior to the plan being put into action.

Renewable energy experts and installers can provide you with all the information you need related to potential goals and expectations. This could be anything from cutting costs during peak hours, ensuring there is consistent power during a power cut and gaining independence from the grid.

Identify an Appropriate System

Of all the renewable energy formats being discovered, invested in and researched, solar power has proved to be the most popular choice for many businesses introducing a pro renewable energy scheme. While solar power can be seen as a priority for your installation, there are other technologies on offer that can further enhance benefits.

There are a number of specifications that will determine the best system for your business, including your location and the energy requirements you have set, so speak with your renewable energy system installer to find out more about what systems would be best suited to your requirements.

Know Where Most of Your Business’ Energy Is Consumed

One of the many ways an installer can determine which system would be best suited to your business is knowing how much energy you use up during the day or over a specific period. You will need to find out the amount of kilowatt hours (KwH) your company uses throughout the course of the year.

You also need to keep in mind what it is that takes up most of your energy consumption, whether that’s lighting, computers, appliances etc. The appropriate system can be identified by understanding these factors and your installer will provide you with a system that meets your needs.

Celebrate!

An office party is more than justified for taking your business onto the renewable energy platform. You should be proud of what you have managed to achieve. From persuading your colleagues to contribute to having the system installed, introducing renewable energy to your business is a big deal. Don’t forget the PR opportunities, nor the champagne!

5 of the Most Demanding Construction Projects in History

There are some stunning architectural masterpieces, mega-structures and dramatic skylines situated across the world, all of which have originated from the extensive and awe-inspiring capabilities of human ingenuity. From the ancient Roman Colosseum to the Sky Tower in Abu Dhabi, there is no doubting the extent to which we will go to achieve a truly spectacular construction project that can be marvelled.

The construction projects included in this list were built without the sophisticated modern-day technologies such as bulldozers, diggers and drills. These imposing structures have lasted for hundreds of years and stood the test of time and human conflict. After all, the oldest construction projects would have relied heavily on unimaginably demanding labour work.

All of the following buildings are certainly worthy of recognition thanks to their wonderfully complex, incredibly sophisticated and innovative designs as well as the limited technological advances involved in their construction.

The Roman Colosseum

An incredible structure most likely built after a military triumph by the Romans. The Colosseums capacity is believed to have reached 80,000 spectators, which is on-par with some of the most substantial sporting venues in the world today.

Despite the Romans advanced engineering capabilities, this was a construction that would prove to be an enormous undertaking. It became the longest construction project in Roman history, incorporating a system of underground tunnels and hydraulics mechanisms.

The Great Pyramid of Giza

One of the world’s most glorious constructions and arguably the most famous building on the planet, the ancient Great Pyramid of Giza was built for the Pharaoh Khufu around 2,550BC.

It took around 20 years to finish and became the tallest structure in the world until the building of the Eiffel Tower. The surrounding pyramids create an astonishingly accurate alignment with the stars, making this construction truly unique.

York Minister Cathedral

Of all the wonderful cathedrals capable of making this list, York Minister cathedral certainly proved to be one of the most demanding constructions in British history.

Construction began in 1220 at the hands of Archbishop Walter de Gray and it wasn’t finished until an incredible 272 years later! It contains the oldest medieval stain glass windows in the world and was constructed entirely of medieval equipment and techniques.

Stonehenge

There is still huge amounts of uncertainty regarding Stonehenge, mainly surrounding its purpose. It is 5,000 years old and one of the most incredible construction projects in the world for its Neolithic history and unique structural plan.

Each stone weighs nearly four tons and would have been dragged nearly 240 miles from southern Wales to its final resting place in Wiltshire. We can only imagine how much man power and time was relied upon to complete such an incredible construction project.

Despite its purpose being relatively unknown, it aligns perfectly with solar movements and is a hugely popular tourist destination on the summer and winter solstices.

The Great Wall of China

The undisputed construction project of all time, construction of the Great Wall was started around 2,000 years ago and remained in the construction phase well into the 16 century AD.

The Great Wall is believed to have previously been built separately for different dynasties throughout the centuries. It stretches over 4,160 miles and has been guarded in the past by over a million individuals, while between 2 and 3 million men are believed to have died during its construction.

It protected the northern border of China from Nomadic invaders and was very much a symbol of imperial power and military strength. It is by far the world’s most substantial construction project.

<u>The 3 Essential Preparation Steps to Fitting a Kitchen</u>

Fitting a kitchen requires a step-by-step plan for you to follow that encourages continuity and an efficient installation project. If you’re planning on fitting your own kitchen it’s important that you use a reliable guide so that everything works as it should.

According to kitchen specialists Chandler Stoneworks there’s no better way to incorporate your very own interior design preferences than by fitting your own kitchen, so here are a few tips you’ll need to follow to make it as accurate and as stress-free as possible.

Gathering Required Tools and Equipment

You should ideally possess a number of DIY skills to progress with your kitchen installation and have enough experience to class yourself as a competent DIY operative. You or those carrying out the project should have electrical, plumbing and carpentry experience.

By covering electrical and plumbing works yourself, you could save a lot of money. It’s important to realise that a kitchen installation is a major project that won’t be completed in 24 hours. You will certainly be requiring a number of essential tools. Here’s what you need to equip yourself with:
*An Electrician Screwdriver
*Masonry Drill Bits
*Battery Drill
*Claw Hammer
*Lump Hammer
*Bolster Chisel
*Spirit Level
*Pliers
*Jigsaw
*Sealant
*Markers
*Saw
*Side Cutters
*Pipe Detector
*Power Detector
You should also remember to use essential safety equipment such as goggles, gloves and face masks and protection devices for when you are using high voltage power tools.

You should always prioritise safety from the start, so do a thorough check of the space you are working in for hidden live cables and water or gas pipes using a power or pipe detector, especially when preparing to drill any holes.

Planning Your Kitchen Layout

When planning the layout of your kitchen you need to take the space available to you into consideration. This process should take up plenty of your time as accurate measurements are key to avoiding all sorts of problems.

Sinks are almost always located beneath a window, so take note of where the windows are in your kitchen space. You also need to consider that sinks shouldn’t be positioned near or on a joint or worktop and the same goes for cooking hobs. You should have washing machines and dishwashers close to a sink so that the amount of plumbing required is greatly reduced.

Hobs will need extra space on either side of them to accommodate larger pans and their handles. Any extraction units should be close to an outside wall, while gas appliances need enough space to encourage gas flow and should not be cramped in tight spaces. When it comes to electrical services, make sure sockets and switches are away from cookers and hobs.

A kitchen layout should be practical and user-friendly, with wall units suitably positioned and base units situated beneath them all of the same width so that handles and doors line up.

Getting Started

With everything organised, the layout planned and your units ready for unpacking, it’s time to do some measurements. Start by measuring 850mm from the highest point after you have checked the level of the floor. Use a spirit level to draw a line across the wall to use as a guide when installing your base units. Measure up from the 850mm mark to the base of your wall units, which is entirely down to you and the space available.

Draw another line from the mark you make using a spirit level. Draw another line up from the second mark you made from a measurement of around 720mm. The measurements suggested are all examples of kitchen wall and base units, so make sure you check the measurements of the units you have purchased prior to measuring the exact measurements provided here.

Assembling the units will require plenty of space, so relocate to somewhere such as a garage which offers you enough space to work efficiently. Some flat-packs are quite heavy, so make sure you get the necessary help to prevent injury. You should also put down a layer for cardboard or sheet wood to prevent your units from scratching the floor.

When putting your units together, it is advised that you use a battery drill and screwdriver to do the job. However, make sure that you only tighten the screws with the screwdriver and with the drill, as this is regarded as being a much safer method. The order in which you install each unit depends on the shape of your kitchen, with an L-shaped kitchen requiring the first unit to be fitted in the corner for instance.

Good quality fixings are required to ensure the safety of your kitchen units and cavity fixings are best suited to plasterboard as the brackets aren’t using a wall stud. Additional brackets are a good idea for plasterboard to quell any anxieties and they can be painted over to prevent them fro being too unsightly.

After following these three tips, you should now be in a position to work your way towards a high quality kitchen installation. Remember to equip yourself with all the necessary tools and to maintain essential health and safety throughout the job.

When relying on an oil tank for your main source of central heating, it is crucial that you check the oil tank regularly for leaks, corrosion and other signs of delay. Once an oil tank has started to deteriorate, you will need to make repairs as soon as possible before some serious damage is done. Although oil tank exteriors are built to withstand almost anything, there are a number of issues you need to look for in order to ensure that your oil tank remains in good condition for many years to come.

We’ll take a look at some of the more common occurrences that can be recognised by sight - as identified by oil tank specialists SG Tanks, how these might affect your oil tank and what you should do to resolve these issues as soon as possible. Regular oil tank maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity of your oil tank, and as the tank is mainly responsible for your central heating, it is pure common sense to make sure that everything continues to run smoothly. You will also want to avoid environmental spills from leaking oil tanks, so regular inspection is important.

Issues to Look for

Rust<br/>Rust is fairly easy to identify as it shows on the tank exterior and can be flaky or add to blistering of paint. A rusting oil tank is a dangerous oil tank as the rust will worsen over time, leading to environmental spills and also perhaps even polluting the oil itself, making it less efficient. Rust is only present in metal tanks, however those with plastic oil tanks must check the plastic for any whitening, cracking or splits or any bulging in the tank profile as this can be equally as dangerous.<br/><br/>Leaking Joints<br/>Cleaning up a leak of heating fuel from a domestic storage tank can cost tens of thousands of pounds to repair fully, so checking for leaking joints is essential if you don’t want to have to foot a hefty bill. One sure-fire sign of an oil leak or a leaking joint is that you see your oil usage suddenly increasing unexpectedly. You will need to check your tank and pipework as soon as you notice this, or purchase a tank monitoring device that can give an early warning of a rapid drop in oil level.

Water or Sludge in the Tank<br/>Tanks containing water or sludge can clog the pipework and damage or even corrode heating systems, which reduces the oil efficiency and ultimately makes your heating cost more. You can find out whether or not your tank has water or sludge in it by looking for a ‘darkened’ area at the bottom of the tank, or by using water-finding paste which needs to be attached to a long stick and then placed into a tank. The colour of the paste will determine whether or not water is present.

Solutions <br/>Conducting regular checks on your oil tank will help to reduce the risk of a large pay-out if something is wrong, as you will be able to catch it before it does too much damage. You can perform simple checks regularly to make sure that everything is in order, but you should also schedule an annual check-up by a qualified professional as they will be able to provide more detail on the condition and maintenance of your oil tank.

When in Doubt, Ask a Professional!<br/>If you are not entirely sure as to the condition of your oil tank, or if you see something suspicious that you want to know more about, it is always recommended to get the advice of a licensed professional. There are countless engineers who have specific experience in the installation, maintenance and removal of oil tanks across the UK and they will be able to provide you with expert advice as to the best course of action. Never take

When you own a home, you are allowed to customise it as much as you desire, within reason. This can include choosing the paint for the walls, choosing the kooky furniture within the property, choosing all your appliances, accessories, wallpapers, carpets, picture frames and even lightbulbs. It can be as plain or extravagant as you want. It can be traditional, contemporary, or even a little crazy. It is up to you.<br/>

However when it comes to the exterior of your house, you don’t have quite as much leeway. There are still ways of allowing your interior design to peek through into the exterior of your house, you just have to be a little more subtle about it. While painting your front door all manner of kooky colours might be a little too drastic, there are still ways you can incorporate your own style into the exterior of your house, such as your lawn ornaments, a quirky house name or number sign, or even an imaginative door knocker on your door.<br/>

Here, Mike from QIM takes a look at five fantastic, quirky and some downright crazy door knockers on unique houses. <br/>

Little Cherub

You might be a practicing Christian, a fan of angelic little cherubs, or you might want something a little different for your door knocker. Choosing a cute cherub door knocker with his or her arms as the knocker makes a bold statement, and one that you are not afraid to share with the world. Cherub doorknockers can be wrought iron, or even plated with galvanised steel to give them a real ‘heavenly’ accent. On the downside, they can sometimes appear a little creepy. <br/>
<br/>

The Jabberwocky<br/>

“We’re all mad here” Step into the world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland with this golden Jabberwocky door knocker. Fans of the book series will no doubt recognise this mythical creature that Alice herself must defeat for the good of all wonderland. Whether you’re a fan of the film adaptations, or you love the books and the books only, this makes a cute and individual door knocker for your home.<br/>
<br/>

Entwined Snakes<br/><br/>The symbol for infinity is often a snake eating its own tail, but what about two snakes entwined? This simple, yet unique door knocker is perfect for those big reptile fans who want to make a statement without having to shove it in the faces of their guests. The snakes coil together around a single door knocker ring, ending at the tip of the knocker as if they are almost kissing. It looks great and it isn’t quite as imposing as some other door knockers!<br/>
<br/>

Lizard Curled around Knocker<br/><br/>This is a bright and breezy door knocker that is guaranteed to make anyone step back for a second look. A beautiful copper lizard curled across the door clasps the knocker in its mouth. Although it will tarnish with time, it almost looks lifelike in the way that its arms are splayed out, and its tail curls around its back. This door knocker makes a great gift for reptile lovers, or just for those looking for a door knocker that will make an impact!<br/>
<br/>

Disembodied Hand<br/><br/>Last but not least, why not creep out your friends and relatives with an eerie disembodied hand as a door knocker? You can choose a traditional wrought iron hand, or try for a creepier zombie themed hand, depending on your personal preference.<br/>

However you might choose to design your home, don’t let convention get in the way of your dreams. Whether you want a water slide leading from the bed to the pool, an indoor garden or greenhouse, or a full ball bit, zoo themed children’s playroom, the choice is yours. It is your home after all, why not make it shine?

MikeJames: Created page with "File:Concrete2.jpg Once widely used in the Roman Empire, concrete was used to create some of the largest structures still standing today, including the Roman Pantheon, the Co..."

Once widely used in the Roman Empire, concrete was used to create some of the largest structures still standing today, including the Roman Pantheon, the Colosseum and more recently the Hoover Dam. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, concrete was slowly phased out as a building material until its comeback in the middle of the 18th century. Nowadays it is a staple construction material and is one of the most widely used man-made materials throughout the modern world.

However concrete is not just useful as a building material for large scale projects. Concrete has a wide range of uses and because of its high density it can often be used as a security measure to deter trespassers, prevent people from breaking and entering and more. This makes it incredibly useful for building sites where the project has been briefly delayed for a few weeks or months and security measures need to be put in place to prevent people from squatting.

We show three examples of concrete structures which can be used to great effect when renovating a building or conducting planned building or demolition works.
<br/>

Concrete Paving Slabs<br/>When working in damp or muddy conditions, thick sludge and mucky earth can really hinder construction progress. Concrete Paving Slabs provide a stable and secure platform upon which the construction workers can progress with construction. They are durable, hard wearing and are well resistant to the elements, making them ideal for long term construction projects or projects working in the open air. Concrete Paving Slabs come in a variety of colours and sizes, so in some cases it is a good idea to choose a brighter colour as it is easier to spot in harsh weather.

Concrete Security Planters<br/>The exoskeleton of the building has been complete, now is the job for the interior constructors and designers. However works may be pushed back or be delayed due to a clash in schedules, bad weather etc. A great and subtle way to increase security is to decorate the exterior of the building with concrete security planters.

How it works is that a concrete basin is placed outside the building that is made of 2/3rds concrete, 1/3rd earth and soil. A young sapling is then planted into the soil, giving the illusion that the planter is only there to provide foliage and a pleasant atmosphere. However the concrete acts as a fantastic security barrier as it prevents vehicles from parking there and also works as a physical barrier if vandals or squatters want to try to force their way into the building using heavy machinery.

Concrete Barriers<br/>Often a classical method of security is the most popular one, and temporary concrete vertical barriers do an excellent job of keeping trespassers out. Their large bulk and variety of sizes prevents caravans and coaches from entering a building site and because of their weight they can easily cordon off sections of the site to prevent public access.

It is important to be aware that a construction site may be perfectly secure during the day; however safety and security measures must be put in place when the employees and construction workers sign off for the day, otherwise the building may be target to squatters and travellers or even vandals. Concrete barriers and security planters deter vandals and squatters so that construction can go ahead as planned without any interruptions.
