The term ‘winder’ refers to the tread of a stair that has non-parallel front and back edges, such as may be found where a staircase changes direction with no landing and so the treads that wind around the corner have one end narrower than the other; that is, they have a roughly triangular shape. They are typically used in situations where space restrictions do not permit the inclusion of a landing.

Sometimes the word ‘winder’ can be used to refer to an entire staircase in which there is a change of direction with no landing, or a ‘double winder’ if there are two changes of direction.

The design of stairs is regulated by Part K of the building regulations, with guidance in Approved Document K.
