	The term Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) and its associated concept stems from a Delivery Framework agreed between Natural England and 13 LPAs across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire which surrounded the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA) in 2009. It followed research evidence that identified public access (and dog walking) could be linked with reduced breeding success of rare bird species of the SPA. The new framework looked at an approach that would enable new development be brought forward within an SPA’s visitor area but without leading to damaging increases in recreational activities.
