SnakeGrid (or Snake Grid) is a projected coordinate system specifically designed for large scale linear engineering and mapping projects. By large scale linear engineering and mapping projects I mean projects that extent in a linear (or corridor) configuration over long distances, such as railways and highways (or motorways).

= History =

The original name of SnakeGrid was RailGrid. However, the name was changed as it is based on the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_Projection Snake Projection]. And, in reality, it can have applications beyond rail projects.

* RailGrid v1 - an internal prototype which was never formally released outside UCL.
* RailGrid v2 - the first version publicly available for use.
* RailGrid v3 - the v3 application allowed for an input of a parameter file that is used to define a different type of SnakeGrid coordinate system.
* SnakeGrid v4.0.1 - a significant re-development of the algorithms to incorporate several new features.
* SnakeGrid v4.0.2 - this version was used on all snake grids developed after April 2016.
* SnakeGrid ASA - the “ASA” algorithm has been developed which uses ASA parameter files for the older grids.
* SnakeGrid v4.1.1 - this iteration of the algorithm is a combination of all the previous algorithms.
* SnakeGrid v4.1.2 - this is the latest version of the SnakeGrid software.
