In May 2018, enhanced features were announced for BRE’s leading construction site performance tool SmartSite. These features are intended to help support users to achieve and demonstrate better site health, safety, environmental and quality performance.

SmartSite is a suite of tools, developed by BRE, that enables construction sites to measure, collate, report and continuously improve their business level performance to make their sites safer, healthier, more sustainable and ultimately improve productivity. SmartSite brings together the highly acclaimed online tools SmartWaste and Yellow Jacket that have more than 20,000 global users, including Balfour Beatty, Brookfield, Crossrail, Heathrow, Kier, Lendlease, Mace, M&S and Whitbread.

SmartSite builds on the previous online iteration – whose industry impacts for its users include: £40m saved on environmental impacts; 14m tonnes of waste diverted from landfill; 100,000 observations of good practice achieved and 2,349 near-miss incidents reported. The tool will add new features that allow users to take ever greater control of their own inputs to generate outputs specific to their own business, safety, health, environmental and quality performance requirements.

The SmartSite tools measure the core key performance indicators (KPIs) of waste, energy consumption and transportation on construction sites, as well as related CO2 emissions, water use, timber procurement, health, safety, quality and process efficiency. Using SmartWaste alone has delivered average savings for customers of £12,000 per project on waste via landfill taxes and associated recovery costs tied into circular economy models.

Simon Cross, Director of SmartSite at BRE and Construction Sector Lead, says:

“The new features – the KPI builder tool that enables the setting of one’s own KPIs, and the calculator application to measure CO2 impact – are a result of BRE listening to its customers’ requirements and responding accordingly.
