Sheathing is used to strengthen a structure and provide a surface for other materials to be applied to </del>it<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">. The most common types of material used for sheathing are engineered timber products such </del>as <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">plywood, gypsum and oriented strand board (OSB)</del>.

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">In very general terms, 'sheathing' </ins>is a <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">covering </ins>or <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">supporting structure that has a similar function to the sheath of a blade; </ins>that is, it <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">acts </ins>as <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">a cover or case</ins>.

It is typically installed after </del>a floor <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">frame </del>and <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">been built but before </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">walls have been built up</del>.

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">In the construction industry, the term ‘sheathing’, or '</ins>sheathing <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">board' can be used to refer to </ins>a <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">layer of board or </ins>panel <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">material </ins>that <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">forms </ins>a <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">part of </ins>floor<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">, wall </ins>and <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">roof assemblies. The outer sheathing board strengthens </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">assembly, provides a surface for other materials to be applied to and may give some degree of weather resistance</ins>.

−

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Exterior wall </del>sheathing <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">can be either non-structural or structural and complements the building envelope in terms of protecting against wind and water entry. Non-structural sheathing can be applied to the exterior wall framing to provide added insulation</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">whereas structural sheathing is attached to the framing and braces the walls against positive </del>and <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">negative forces</del>.

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">The materials most commonly used for </ins>sheathing <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">include; engineered timber</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">plywood, gypsum </ins>and <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">oriented strand board (OSB)</ins>.

New page

‘Sheathing’ is the term given for a layer of board or panel material that is used in floor, wall and roof assemblies. Sheathing is used to strengthen a structure and provide a surface for other materials to be applied to it. The most common types of material used for sheathing are engineered timber products such as plywood, gypsum and oriented strand board (OSB).

Floor sheathing (also known as sub-flooring) is a tongue and groove structural panel that carries live loads down to the floor joists beneath it. It is typically installed after a floor frame and been built but before the walls have been built up.

Exterior wall sheathing can be either non-structural or structural and complements the building envelope in terms of protecting against wind and water entry. Non-structural sheathing can be applied to the exterior wall framing to provide added insulation, whereas structural sheathing is attached to the framing and braces the walls against positive and negative forces.

Roof sheathing is structural as it helps to provide lateral bracing of the roof frame, carrying live and dead loads down from the rafters and trusses. The sheathing is applied to the trusses and beams, and the covering is applied over the top.
