The Penguin Dictionary of Architecture (third edition) was published in 1980. It was created for Penguin Reference and compiled by John Fleming, Hugh Honour and Nikolaus Pevsner.

It defines a rainwater head as: ‘A box-shaped structure of metal, usually cast iron or lead, and sometimes elaborately decorated, in which water from a gutter or parapet is collected and discharged into a downpipe.’’
