QUANGO stands for a Quasi Autonomous Non-Governmental [https://www.designingbuildings.co.uk/wiki/Organisation Organisation].

The term is similar in use to arms-length bodies (ALB) which refers to an organisation that the government has devolved power to with varying degrees of sponsorship or support.

ALB's include's non-departmental public bodies, executive agencies and Non-Ministerial Departments (NMDs). QUANGO became a generic term for anything that may be supported by the government and use of the term increased relative to the number of bodies such as non-departmental public bodies (NDPB) in existence.

In 2009 there were over 700 NDPB's being sponsored by the UK government, in 2020 there were more than 200 and just under 300 including all ALB's.
