New page

[[File:Pelmet.jpg]]

A pelmet is a box-like framework positioned to cover the top of a window so as to conceal the curtain fixtures. They are typically made of lightweight timber such as plywood, or foamcore. They are sometimes referred to as window cornices, which often incorporate moulding.

Pelmets are often decorative, arched to varying degrees or flat-bottomed, and can be upholstered to match the curtains. Fabric pelmets are sometimes referred to as valances, and can be creatively designed with lots of excess material to be voluminous and balloon-like.

As well as being decorative, pelmets also serve an insulation purpose and can save wasted energy by preventing convection currents. Once hot air reaches the level of the top of the windows, the air round the windows cools and tends to fall. This creates a thermal current as hot air is sucked down as it is cooled. The pelmet acts as a stopper to this flow of air.
