Earlier types of plate glass required the initial sheet of glass to be very thick to allow for a portion of its surface to be ground away to make it flat. However, the Patent process enabled thinner sheets of glass to be ground and polished which meant that manufacturers could make more finished glass from the same amount of raw materials.’&lt;br /&gt;
