New page

[[File:Notre Dame du Haut1.jpg]]

= Introduction =

Notre Dame du Haut is a Roman Catholic chapel designed by Le Corbusier. Located on a hill near Belfort, Ronchamp, France, the building is widely considered to be one of the most important buildings of the 20th century.

Commissioned to design the chapel in 1950, Le Corbusier saw an opportunity to depart from his trademark principles of standardisation and ‘machine aesthetic’, in response to the site, both physically due to the hillside location limiting access, and in terms of the historical legacy of the site as being a place of worship for centuries.

The chapel was to be built on the site of a 4th century Christian stone chapel which had been mostly destroyed during the Second World War.

Completed in 1954, the chapel represents a defining move away from the characteristically sparse and functionalist form of Modernism that Le Corbusier was known for from his earlier projects, and today is regarded as one of his finest achievements.

= Design and construction =

[[File:Notre Dame du Haut2.jpg]]

Upon being given the commission by the church reformists, Le Corbusier wanted to focus on spatial purity and not over-complicate the design. Therefore, the design for the chapel is programmatically relatively simple – two entrances, an altar and three chapels – while still being stylistically and formally quite complex.

The main structure of the building consists of thick (4-12 inches), gently curving walls which provide structural support for the masonry as well as the massive curvilinear roof. It is the walls which provide the building with its sculptural character. In addition to acting as structural and sculptural elements, the walls also serve a purpose as acoustic amplifiers, helping to reflect sound out over the field.

The aerodynamic design of the monumental curved concrete roof mimics the curvature of an airplane wing and, despite its massive and heavy characteristics, manages to achieve the appearance of weightlessness. This is due to the roof being supported by columns embedded in the walls rather than the walls themselves, making it appear to float above the building. This creates a 10 cm gap between roof and the walls, allowing for light to seep in a long strip into the chapel.

Le Corbusier focused a lot of time and energy on designing the south wall. As it starts out as a point on the east end, it expands to up to 10 ft thick on its west side, curving towards the south. In addition, the window openings slant towards their centres at varying degrees which has the effect of letting light enter the building at different angles.

[[File:Notre Dame du Haut3.jpg]]

Despite the more complex layout suggested by the external appearance of the chapel, the interior is rather simple in plan. Le Corbusier’s intention was to create a meditative and reflective space. This is achieved in part by the stark white walls combined with the irregular angles of light entering from the irregular arrangement of windows, which are glazed with a mixture of clear and coloured glass.

Three thick white walls curve inwards from the outside, creating smaller chapels at the sides of the main space. One is painted bright red, and another is painted violet. The internal and external walls were finished with mortar, sprayed onto the surfaces before being either whitewashed or painted. Meanwhile, the roof was left raw.

The slope of the site is followed by the floor towards the main altar and covered with a concrete surface. Based on Le Corbusier’s innovative Modulor system of proportions, the floor is divided into a gridded pattern.

= Legacy =

Despite being seen as a radical departure of style for Le Corbusier, the building can still be seen to adhere to many of the same principles of purity, openness and communality that informed his earlier work.

Nevertheless, it was a contextual response to the site which inspired Le Corbusier away from the mechanistic International Style that he was known for at the time.

Today, the chapel remains an operational religious building, under the guardianship of a private foundation. It welcomes some 80,000 visitors each year.
