In January 2017, the Paris-based architecture firm Martin Duplantier Architectes won a Chinese-organised competition for their designs of a series of ‘illusionist’ bridges and pavilions.

Proposed for the World Heritage Site of western Zhangjiajie, China, the structures comprise geometric forms and delicate placement to create a ‘physical relationship’ with the surrounding rock faces.

A footbridge is shaped as an elliptical disk which mirrors the surrounding environment, offering views through an off-centred hole covered in strong netting. This is intended for visitors to be able to ‘lie down in the void’.
