Their purpose is to indicate the direction and steepness of a slope; the thickness, shape and density of the distribution of hachures on a drawing illustrate the general sense of steepness. Applied properly this method can successfully communicate quite specific shapes of terrain, both natural and man-made.’&lt;br /&gt;
