The future of Grenfell Tower

The Deputy Prime Minister is responsible for decisions on the future of Grenfell Tower.

No decision has yet been made. She recognises the importance of working sensitively with the

Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission and the community on this issue and supports progress

towards a fitting and lasting memorial.

Site maintenance

Tower site contractor, DUK, carries out regular maintenance and checks of the props (the metal

supports installed in the tower), the hoardings around the site, and the lighting, security systems

and scaffolding.

Local opportunities including employment, training and practical support, are available from DUK.

Some of these include:

• DUK North Kensington £45,000 premises and equipment fund

• Funding adult education English classes

• Electric van for local charities’ use

• Donations to local food banks

affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy, including children and young people. Visit the NHS

Introduction

Hello. I’m Ashwaaq Hassan, a civil servant from the Grenfell Tower site management team. This update gives you information on works happening at the site, and how to get in touch. Our contact details are on each slide and at the end of this update.

The future of Grenfell Tower

The Deputy Prime Minister is responsible for decisions on the future of Grenfell Tower. No decision has yet been made. The Deputy Prime Minister recognises the importance of working sensitively with then Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission and the community on this issue and supports progress towards a fitting and lasting memorial.

Site maintenance

Tower site contractor, DUK, continues to carry out regular maintenance and checking of:

* - the ‘props’ – which are the metal supports in the tower
* -the external site hoardings and gates
* -the lighting and alarm systems and the 24-hour security system.

They inspect the scaffolding around the tower each week and carry out any necessary maintenance.

Lighting around the site is controlled using motion sensors and timers. The timings of the banner lighting are adjusted every two weeks according to sunset time.

Social value and local opportunities

An important part of DUK’s work is to provide long-term and sustainablen opportunities for the community through social value, including donations to local food banks, and an electric van for local charities’ use.

RBKC’s Lancaster West Estate refurbishment

Please note that RBKC’s refurbishment work on the Lancaster West Estate

walkways is due to continue until April 2025.

Some of the refurbishment works require council contractors to access the Grenfell

tower site and garage areas. We have let the council know that their drivers should

act with consideration when attending the site and passing through the entrance

gates to avoid disturbing residents.

Air quality monitoring

The air quality in the Grenfell Tower area and at the tower site is monitored and

assessed to understand if there is a risk to health.

Current evidence suggests the risk to public health from air pollution in the area

remains low. We are aware of the health concerns in the community and work

closely with NHS England so that anyone worried about their health can access the

support they need.
