St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Hammer Beam Roof Decoration The older part of the cathedral has a superb medival hammer beam roof, ornamented with figures of 30 angels (see TL8564 : Nave Ceiling, St Edmundsbury Cathedral). The roof is boldly painted and gilded; the figures on the hammer beams were painted in 1948, whilst the rest of the roof was coloured in 1982. Decorating the ceiling in this way helped to link the nave with the modern extension (TL8564 : St Edmundsbury Cathedral).
