On 24th July 2017, the Business Secretary Greg Clark announced the launch of the first phase of investment to boost expertise in battery technology.

The first phase of the £246 million investment comes as the Industrial Strategy’s landmark ‘Faraday Challenge’ is launched; a 4-year investment round aimed at delivering a coordinated programme of competitions to boost research and development in battery technology.

The government’s intention is to try and ensure the UK builds on its current strengths in the area, and leads the world in the design, development and manufacture of electric batteries.

The Faraday Challenge Advisory Board will be established to oversee the challenge and ensure its coherence and impact. The competitions of the Challenge are divided into 3 streams:

* Research: A £45 million competition to create a virtual Battery Institute.
* Innovation: The most promising research from the Institute will be progressed closer to market.
* Scale-up: A competition to identify the best proposition for a new development facility to ensure real-world use and application of the technology.
