In his book, The Use of Lateral Thinking, de Bono writes, “Creative thinking is a special part of lateral thinking which covers a wider field. Creative thinking often requires a talent for expression, whereas lateral thinking is open to everyone who is interested in new ideas.”&lt;br /&gt;

In terms of construction, the creative process involves the exploration of various strategies that can be applied to satisfy the requirements of a project brief. However, it is difficult to describe what the creative process actually is.&lt;br /&gt;

Building projects are generally divided into a series of stages.Some stages are more creative than others. The concept design stage is generally considered to be the first, and most creative design stage, however this can be a relatively small part of the overall project.&lt;br /&gt;

Within the construction sector, some roles are more creative than others. Professions such as engineers, architects and surveyors are taught particular approaches to problem solving; they use a common language and often have a clear idea of what is expected of them professionally. These informal rules shape problem solving approaches, or heuristics, which guide the innovation process as strongly as the formal rules.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, it is increasingly becoming apparent that the ability to take knowledge and resources and mobilise these with the correct technical skills leading to the creation of new products, processes and services is critical in establishing and maintaining a competitive advantage. The speed with which a firm can innovate is also important.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
True innovation often comes from deep within the supply chain or organisation. Practitioners should be empowered to commit time and resources to exploring new approaches and leaders have a role to play to help organisations move away from a risk averse culture towards a more creative outcome.&lt;br /&gt;
